New champ to be crowned

Artie Escobado Memorial Baseball Tournament begins today
BY JEFF LETOFSKY | The Pueblo Chieftain | JUN 22, 2018

For the 12th year, the annual Artie Escobado Memorial Baseball Tournament will be played this weekend at the Runyon Sports Complex.

"It's a good little tournament," tournament director Mike Escobado said. "We used to do the same age as the Andenucio Tournament. This is our fourth or fifth year where we've gone to high-school-aged teams. Everybody is banging on the door to get into this tournament. We made the right move offering it to high school teams, seniors and under. We're really happy with the direction of the tournament."

The 10-team, three-day tournament will be played today through Sunday at Hobbs and Andenucio fields. Every team plays four games. The championship game is set for 1 p.m. Sunday on Hobbs.

Farmington, N.M., is the defending champion and aren't in the field, so a new champion will be crowned. Farmington beat Cherry Creek in the title game last season. Cherry Creek is back in the tournament.

In fact, there are seven out-of-town teams in the tournament along with three local teams -- Loaf 'N Jug Compehos, Loaf 'N Jug Fabrizio and Pueblo Central. The out-of-town teams include Cherry Creek, Colorado Instructional League, Fountain-Fort Carson, New Mexico Dirtbags, Regis, Rock Canyon and the Washington Nationals Scout Team.

"Loaf 'N Jug won our tournament the first three years in a row and haven't won it since," Escobado said. "Hopefully, they have good showings this year. Both Loaf 'N Jug teams are pretty strong.

We try and alternate different Pueblo high schools because the interest is so high. We used to get at least three or four Pueblo high school teams. With the interest, now we can only have one Pueblo team."
