Loaf 'N Jug wins Cherry Creek Classic

THE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN JUN 10, 2018

DENVER - For the first time ever, the Loaf 'N' Jug legion baseball team won the 32nd annual Cherry Creek Classic.

LNJ defeated Cheyenne Mustangs (Wyo.) 14-10 in the championship game at Cherry Creek High School.

Coach Mario Mattivi said no Pueblo team had ever advanced to the championship round.

"It's amazing," Mattivi said. "It's a feeling you can't really describe. It's even better because we did so with all Southern Colorado kids. We have one kid from Raton (N.M.) one kid from Lamar and one kid from La Junta and then the rest are all Pueblo guys."

Mattivi said LNJ had just one week of practice together before entering the tournament.

Despite the brief period of time the team played together, they still accomplished the feat.

"We got it done in all aspects of the game," Mattivi said. "We did well pitching, hitting, fielding, base running. We played well."

Mattivi said LNJ led wire-to-wire but said they got "lax on the mound," but never got flustered throughout the tournament.

They'll need it as they prepare for the 39th annual Tony Andenucio Memorial Baseball Tournament from June 14-17.

"Everyone will be watching us against," Mattivi said. "Summer baseball is such a closed circuit. Not trying to sound cocky but everyone is going to know what we did over the weekend. We're the home team and, after what we did over the weekend, that puts a target on our backs."
