4-2 win against Four Corners on Friday at Hobbs Field.

Wins two at 'Nuch on Day 2

BY JEFF BERSCH | The Pueblo Chieftain | JUN 15, 2018

It was the good, the bad and the ugly of baseball Friday night of Hobbs Field.

Through it all, Loaf 'N Jug emerged with two more victories, staying perfect in pool play at the 39th annual Tony Andencio Memorial Baseball Tournament.

LNJ, the local entry in the 12-team field beat 4-Corners 4-2 in the first game and outlasted Grand Junction 19-11 in the second game.

The first win saw Loaf 'N Jug beat a pitcher who is headed to the Tennessee and was the Gatorade Player of the Year in New Mexico. He was throwing in the low-90s.

The second victory saw a combined 30 runs, 24 hits , 10 errors, eight walks, seven wild pitches and two hit batters.

It ended when Seth Mora delivered a three-run triple in the bottom of the fifth to make it 19-11. There's an eight-run rule in pool play.

'We've seen this before", Loaf 'N Jug's Brock Rodriques said. "Last year against Cheyenne they put up a four-spot in the ninth and we came back with five. And last week at (Cherry), we kind of let it snowball and came back with five runs. This team hits. It's what we do."

LNJ showed they hit the best in the first game, touching 4-Corners starter Chase Silsethfor four runsin three-plus innings. That included two runs in the first that set the tone.

Silseth had just a 1.25 ERA in 53 innings pitched during his senior season at Piedra Vista High School in Farmington.

"That's an SEC (Southeastern Conference) dude on the mound and we had guys turning around 95," LNJ coach Mario Mattivi said. "We came out and thought 'Oh boy! We're in for a long one. But we exepct that. That (first inning) helped our confidence.

Jayden Cordova and Adam Muniz had back-to-back hits, the second a double, to score the first run for LNJ. Kyle Jameson made it 2-0 with a single over second base.

The third run scored on a wild pitch in the third inning, pushing LNJ's lead to 3-0. Silseth gave up a hit and a walk to begin the fourth inning and exited.

Rodriques' sacrifice fly ball made it 4-1 and Ty Garcia did the rest for Loaf 'N Jug. The left-hander from Pueblo West gave up five hits and one earned run in seven innings. He walked four and had four strikeouts.

"Ty Garcia, wiw, but I've seen him to that all year," Mattivi said. "He wasn't the (South-Central League) pitcher of the year for nothing."

LNJ scored in every inning of the win over Grand Junction, which scored in four of its five innings at the player.

That included six run in the top of the third that tied it 9-9. Loaf 'N Jug had scored seven runs in the first inning, with the help of three errors.

Rodriques score in the go-ahead run in the third in a single, his third hit of the game. He finished with three RBIs.

Jameson, Donavin Ada, Mora and Lucas Watson each had two hits. More drove in four runs, while the other three had two RBIs apiece.

Darion Martinez came on in relief of Efren Perez in the third inning and settled things down for LNJ. He allowed four runs over 2 1/3 innings although only one was earned.

Loaf' N Jug, of course, is looking to become the first Pueblo team since 1984 to win a 'Nuch championship and the forst to play in a title game since 2001.

It has two more pool games tonight, the first against Cheyenne - also 3-0 - at 5 p.m. It then faces 2-1 Burkburnett (Texas) at 7:30 p.m. The top two teams from each pool advance to the semifinals Sunday.

"We just have to take care of business and try to go 1-0 against Cheyenne," Rodriques said, "and regroup and try to go 1-0 against Burkburnett."
