Spradley Collegians set for 2019 campaign

Pechek back to lead local summer college team in Mile High Intercollegiate Baseball League

Led by manager Tony Pechek, the Spradley Collegians summer baseball team will kick off the season this week with a taxing schedule ahead.

The team has 30 games on its schedule in a 44-day period. It plays in the Mile High Intercollegiate Baseball League, mostly doubleheaders. All 30 games are league games.

It starts Saturday with a 11 a.m. twin-bill at Hobbs Field at the Runyon Sports Complex against Prime Academy. The teams also play a single game at 5 p.m. Monday at Prime Academy’s home field, Overland High School. The Collegians wrap up a busy first week with another single game against the Generals at Bear Creek High School at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The Collegians will play through July 14.

Many of the team’s players are local products who are playing junior college baseball throughout the region. The roster also includes nine players from Colorado State University-Pueblo — Rocco Arguto, Josh Dahl, Jake Dahle-Melsaether, Alan Garcia, Ian Garcia, Logan Gibbons, Zachary Hanenberg, Stone Romero and Diego Sanchez.

There are 11 pitchers on the roster with nine of the them right-handed, two left-handed.

“We have two, two-way guys and two guys who have thrown in the past who will fill in,” Pechek said. “A lot of right-handers. A couple of guys had great springs (CSU-Pueblo’s Josh Dahl and Otero’s Tim McIntyre). Those two guys we expect a lot from.”

Pechek went on to describe the characteristics of this year’s club.

“It’s going to be a gritty team like every other Pueblo team,” Pechek said. “We won’t hit a lot of home runs and we’ll be crazy on the base paths along with playing good defense and pitching.

Unlike last season when Pechek was scrambling to find outfielders, there are a handful to choose from this year. In fact, the team is position-player heavy.

“We are position-player heavy this year,” Pechek said. “It’ll allow us to give guys a rest during the summer because it’s a grind with all the games in the heat. It’ll be nice to give guys some breaks and get to enjoy summer ball a little more.”

Another feather for the squad is an automatic bid into the Stan Musial World Series this summer. The Runyon Sports Complex will host the event July 17-24 and that allows the Spradley Collegians an automatic bid.

“We’ll probably have to add a few players by that time in the summer,” Pechek said. “Our players are really looking forward to it.”

Pechek also wanted to give a plug to his sponsor — Spradley Motors — saying without them the college summer experience wouldn’t happen for the players.
